How to Build a Life That Can Weather Life's Storms

Once upon a time, two builders decided to construct their houses. One of them chose to build his house on the sand, while the other decided to build on a firm foundation of rock. The first builder completed his house quickly, but the second builder took his time, ensuring that every stone was placed perfectly.

Soon after, a storm hit the area, and the house on the sand crumbled, while the house on the rock stood strong. The second builder had made the wise decision to build his house on a solid foundation, and he was able to weather the storm.

I am sure you might have heard this story or something similar before as a kid growing up. This story teaches us the importance of building our lives on a firm foundation of faith, rather than on the shifting sands of temporary things.

Building your life on a solid foundation is crucial if you want to succeed in the storms of life. Challenges and difficulties are inevitable, but it’s how we handle them that defines our character. In Matthew 7:24, Jesus tells us the parable of the two builders summed up above.

Similarly, if we build our lives on anything other than a solid foundation of truth, we will crumble under the weight of life’s challenges. It’s easy to get swept away by the waves of difficulties that come our way, but when we hold fast to God’s word, we can weather any storm. Matthew 7:24 tells us how to do this. It’s by listening to and obeying the teachings of Jesus. But how do we do this?
Firstly, we need to make it a priority to study and understand the teachings of Jesus. This means reading and meditating on the Bible regularly, attending church, and engaging in Bible study groups. It’s not enough to just read the words; we need to apply them to our lives.

Secondly, we need to obey Jesus’ teachings by putting them into action. This requires humility and a willingness to submit our will to God’s will. Jesus’ teachings call us to love our neighbors as ourselves, forgive those who have wronged us, and serve others selflessly. We can only do these things by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit and surrendering our own desires.

Lastly, we need to cultivate a life of prayer and intimacy with God. This means setting aside time each day to talk to God and listen to His voice. When we listen to His voice and obey His leading, we can be confident that we are building our lives on the solid rock of His truth.

In conclusion, building our lives on the solid rock foundation requires intentional effort and daily practice. By studying and obeying the teachings of Jesus, cultivating a life of prayer, and relying on the Holy Spirit, we can build a life that is unshakable in the face of life’s challenges and difficulties.
