Acknowledging that the presence of God helps deal with our fears.

The Presence of God: The Antidote to Fear

I still remember the day like it was yesterday. I was a young man, mid-career, and had been asked to make a presentation to explain the performance of my business unit. The stakes were sky-high. Prior to this, our business wasn’t doing well. The last presentation we gave had gone poorly, and this upcoming meeting carried rumors that it might be the deciding factor—whether the unit would continue or be shut down.

That meant everyone could lose their jobs.

Now, for me, it wasn’t even the potential job loss that troubled me most. It was the thought of failing. The possibility that my work, my effort, and my leadership could all be written off in that one meeting. Fear gripped me. My heart pounded in my chest. My mind ran through all the ways I could stumble.

But something happened that shifted everything: I remembered the presence of God.

Why Fear Feels So Overwhelming

Fear isn’t just about the situation itself—it’s about the weight we attach to it. For me, the fear wasn’t the presentation; it was what the presentation represented. Failure. Shame. Rejection.

For many men, our fears run in similar tracks:

  • Fear of failing our families.
  • Fear of losing control of our future.
  • Fear of not measuring up.
  • Fear of the unknown.

Fear thrives when we believe we’re facing life’s battles alone. It whispers, “What if you fail? What if you’re not enough? What if God doesn’t show up this time?”

The Game-Changer: God’s Presence

Psalm 23:4 puts it simply: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”

The presence of God doesn’t mean the valley disappears. It doesn’t mean the boardroom gets less intimidating, the bills stop coming, or the challenges evaporate. What it does mean is this: you never face it alone.

That’s what I experienced in that season. I went into that presentation not with trembling hands, but with a quiet confidence: “Lord, You are with me.” It didn’t erase the pressure. But it gave me strength to stand tall. And when I presented, it went better than I ever imagined. Not because I was flawless, but because His presence steadied me.

I was not alone, neither are you!

All through Scripture, God keeps reminding His people that courage doesn’t come from flexing your own strength—it comes from knowing He’s right there with you.

A good example is Moses. He had the overwhelming job of leading an entire nation through the wilderness. But God said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” (Exodus 33:14). In other words, “Moses, you don’t need to carry this alone. I’m here.”

After Moses was Joshua. He was stepping into some massive shoes, with battles and responsibilities ahead that could crush a man. But God told him straight up: “Do not be afraid… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). God wasn’t just cheering him on from the sidelines—He was walking right beside him.

And then there’s the disciples in the storm. They were terrified, convinced they were about to die. But the game-changer wasn’t their skill at rowing. It was the fact that Jesus was in the boat. His presence turned panic into peace (Mark 4:39-40).

Same God. Same presence. Same antidote to fear.

How to Walk in God’s Presence Daily

The real question is: how do you and I make God’s presence more real in our daily battles—at work, at home, in the midnight hours when fear creeps in?

Here are a few practical steps:

  1. Start the day with awareness: Before checking your phone, acknowledge Him: “Lord, thank You that You’re with me today.”
  2. Use worship as a reset button: Fear thrives in noisy hearts. Worship creates space for God’s presence to fill.
  3. Anchor yourself in Scripture: Verses like Isaiah 41:10 (“Fear not, for I am with you…”) remind you what’s true when fear screams otherwise.
  4. Recall God’s track record: When fear says you’ll fail, remind yourself how God carried you before.
  5. Lean into brotherhood: Surround yourself with men who remind you that you’re not alone and that God is with you.

My Takeaway from That Day

Walking into that boardroom, fear could have crippled me. But God’s presence gave me strength. The presentation went well, the business didn’t shut down, and I learned something that has stayed with me ever since: fear is powerless when you know God is near.

It’s not that the stakes vanish. It’s not that challenges get smaller. It’s that your perspective shifts. You realize you are not the one carrying the weight—He is.

Here’s the Word for You

Whatever fear is staring you down right now—whether it’s about your career, your family, your finances, or your future—remember this: the presence of God is the antidote to fear.

Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that nothing—not fears for today, not worries about tomorrow—can separate us from His love. That love is His presence. And that presence is what makes you fearless.

So next time fear comes knocking, don’t shrink back. Stand tall and declare: “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.”
